The English Skills Learning Center proudly recognizes 10 of our students who have recently obtained their driving permits or licenses!
Congratulations to Ranjana Satyal, Ahmed Rashed, Paw Law Eh, Sundos Mohamed, Wasim Mashi, Andranik Simonyan, Iram Quayyum, Luz Gonzales, Motikhar Sanyasi, and Gokul Gurung!
These students have really worked hard to be able to pass a test that even native English speakers have trouble with.
As students prepare for their tests, they learn new vocabulary, practice their English, learn driving rules and regulations, study the Utah driving handbook, and learn to answer difficult test questions.
ESLC classes are taught at several different locations. One of our programs, located at the LDS Humanitarian Center, offers one of the few Driving Tutoring classes and is taught to refugees mainly.
These classes last 10-12 weeks and are focused on preparing students for the written driving examination.
Most of the students who attend these classes could get to work and school by car spending an average of 20 minutes. Instead, they spend over an hour using public transportation.
Once students obtain their permits (granted to people who haven't had a license before), they are required to take a driving education course. This will allow them to take a road test.
Students who have previously had a license from another country or state can take a road test right away and drive to work the next day if they pass it.
We currently have about 20 students in our new class session. This is taught by 4 volunteers (Betsy Brennan, Neal Nelson, Lee Jepsen, and Curtis Miles) who prepare for class and teach once or twice a week.
They have done a wonderful job and have seen the great progress in their students skills!
We are all glad to be part of this wonderful program!
