World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day will be celebrated in Salt Lake at Granite High School Saturday June 21, 2-8pm. There will be performances from different refugee groups, ethnic food & crafts and a soccer tournament beginning at 9am.

Granite High School is located at 3305 South 500 East in Salt Lake City.

Empowering Parents Program Graduations

The Empowering Parents Program has been a great success this year. We have been having celebration parties at all of the participating schools to give the parents a certificate & supplies to study English over the summer break. We are currently at Jackson, Lincoln, Mt. View & Butterfield Canyon Elementary Schools as well as Northwest Milddle School.

Rosemarie Hunter & Kim Schmidt will be presenting about a recent trip to Burmese refugee camps in Thailand, and their subsequent insights on how to help refugees who reach the United States.

Great new tutor class

Our newest tutor class has set the record for the most tutors in one training session. We had 29 new tutors come to train! Our student waiting list is long and we are really happy about all of the enthusiasm from this new group.

We maxed out the capacity of our new training room, but everyone was upbeat and eager to learn and serve!

The Center will be closed Dec. 22- Jan. 2 for the Holidays.

We look forward to our January training for new tutors Jan 15, 17, 22 & 24 from 6-9pm. The training will be held in our new conference room right here at 631 West North Temple.

Holiday Party Dec. 6

We will be transitioning into the holiday spirit festively here at the ESLC. Our annual holiday party helps tutors and students relax and meet with other learning groups. We will have delicious holiday treats and be passing out the 2007 ESLC cookbooks with recipes contributed by students.

Please bring your students to celebrate the year’s accomplishments. The party will be held here at our Center (see “contact us” for directions).

New Website On Its Way

We are excited about the many changes and developments at ESLC this past year. We have implemented a new program that reaches out to parents through the school system. We have a new computer lab with programs available to teach English and basic computer skills. We have also expanded our workplace program to reach out to more employees and community partners.

On top of all the new and exciting work we are doing, we have a new website that will be easily maintained and that we can keep up-to-date. Keep checking back for news and updates.
