Sobre o evento
This workshop is designed to provide a baseline of understanding about trauma and how it affects adults, as well as research-based strategies for supporting individuals who have experienced trauma. It is open to anyone working with adults in a educational setting. Specifically, English language teachers, case managers, volunteers working with immigrants and refugees, and program managers will find the most from this workshop.
When designing this workshop, we realized that we are only able to scratch the surface of these topics with the time we have. For this reason, we have developed a two-part series.
Learning Objectives for Part 1
- define what it means to be “trauma-informed” by developing a personal definition
- describe how a trauma response may look generally and in various professional settings
- describe how trauma affects the brain and learning processes
- demonstrate understanding of best practices in responding to a person in crisis by offering suggestions in a scenario-based activity
- demonstrate understanding of cultivating a safe experience in an organization’s services by identifying best practices within the areas of welcoming new clients, providing instruction, respecting client privacy, and developing trauma-sensitive materials for educational purposes
Learning Objectives for Part 2
- identify whether an organization is trauma-organized, trauma informed, or trauma healing
- define “resilient” through a description of what resilience looks like within services
- identify key practices for coping with secondary trauma and compassion fatigue
- describe activities that support learning and how they apply to professional settings
- identify areas of improvement within policies and procedures/organization toward becoming more trauma-healing as an organization
