Celebrating Annie Porter: 2025 Recipient of the Jean and Bruce Bingham Literacy Legacy Award and May Volunteer of the Month

We are thrilled to share that Annie Porter has been named the 2025 recipient of the Jean and Bruce Bingham Literacy Legacy Award and our May Volunteer of the Month!

Annie has been a committed volunteer with the English Skills Learning Center (ESLC) since 2017. In her English classes, she brings deep compassion, creativity, and a student-centered approach to learning. Whether she's adapting her lessons to meet the needs of individual students or exploring new ways to support their growth, Annie leads with heart, patience, and purpose.

Her commitment perfectly reflects the spirit of the Jean and Bruce Bingham Literacy Legacy Award, which honors volunteers who go above and beyond in their service.

About the Jean and Bruce Bingham Literacy Legacy Award

In 2013, the English Skills Learning Center (ESLC) established an annual award to recognize an outstanding volunteer who has gone above and beyond expectations. The recipients of this first award were Jean and Bruce Bingham.

Jean was a long-time tutor and office support volunteer in the early years of the ESLC, while Bruce served on the Board of Directors for many years. After receiving the award, Jean and Bruce made the generous decision to sponsor it annually as a way to remain connected with the organization and support the volunteers who make our work possible.

In recognition of their continued support and philanthropic leadership, the award was officially named the Jean and Bruce Bingham Literacy Legacy Award.

Each year, the award process begins in January with a call for nominations. Volunteers across all roles teachers, tutors, office support, and board members are eligible. Following careful review by ESLC staff, a recipient is selected by February, notified in March, and recognized publicly in April during National Volunteer Appreciation Week. This award helps recognize the incredible volunteers and individuals of the ESLC.

Annie’s Legacy

Annie has made a lasting impact on the ESLC community through her ability to connect deeply with learners and her ongoing curiosity about how to improve their experience. Her students feel seen and supported, and her fellow volunteers and staff continually admire her dedication and insight.

She embodies the heart of ESLC’s mission of building a community where all voices are celebrated.

Congratulations, Annie! Thank you for all you do and for continuing the legacy of compassion, connection, and community at the ESLC.
