Volunteer Pathways
Lead Teacher
Instructional volunteers are assigned to teach one class long term. Lead teachers may work alone or in tandem with another teacher. This is a weekly commitment for 1-2 days per week. Pre-service training is required for all instructional volunteers.
Classroom Assistant
Classroom assistants support lead instructors by faciliting small group work or one-on-one student support. This volunteer opportunity requires a weekly committment of 1-2 hours.
Professional Support
If you have a skillset to share but don't have time for weekly committments, we'd love to talk about special projects! Editing, grant writing, photography, and graphic design are all examples of special skills that volunteers have donated to the ESLC!
WHY VOLUNTEER WITH THE ESLC?
Becoming a literacy volunteer is a great way to make new friends in the community! Whether assigned as a lead teacher or classroom assistant, ESLC volunteers build relationships with the people in class and with other volunteers they work alongside.
Did you know that research shows that volunteering not only makes people happier, but can also improve mental health over time? Building up social connections, helping others, and actively participating in community development are fundamental to mental well-being and personal satisfaction.
As an ESLC volunteer you have something to give and you also have something to gain!
ESLC volunteers value the diversity and strength of their community and enjoy learning new things. We encourage community members from all educational, linguistic, and career backgrounds to engage with us!
Volunteers under 18 are required to provide a letter of support from a parent or guardian. Volunteers under age 16 are not currently permitted to participate in regular volunteer opportunities.
All volunteers must complete a background check through BCI (Bureau of Criminal Identification).

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?
WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER?
We ask lead teaching volunteers to support adult English language learners 3-5 hours per week. This time includes the time required to prepare for class, travel to and from the class site, and teaching time. Lead teachers are typically assigned to teach one or two days per week.
Classrooom support volunteers are asked to commit to attend class one or two days per week. Classes range from one to two hours, depending on the program.
