ESLC's Annual Picnic

Each year, the English Skills Learning Center looks forward to our annual Picnic in the Park, a special event where staff, students, families, volunteers, and community partners come together to celebrate everything that makes our work meaningful. This year’s picnic was no exception.

The timing of the event is always meaningful as it falls during Welcoming Week, Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, and the anniversary of the ESLC. It’s a time when we get to reflect on the power of language, education, and connection, while celebrating the vibrant community we are honored to serve.

This year’s picnic was full of energy and laughter. We had a thriving soccer game that drew cheers from both players and spectators, plenty of pizza and drinks to keep everyone fueled, lively music, and fun activities like face painting for kids. One of the most special parts of the afternoon was seeing volunteers and students spending time together outside of class, connecting not just with each other but also with each other’s friends and families. These moments of connection are at the heart of what we do.

The event was made possible by the incredible support of Promise South Salt Lake, who helped us host this celebration. We are also grateful to our many community partners who came to share resources, information, and games with attendees. Special thanks to Utah Community Action, the Salt Lake County Health Department for providing free immunizations, DonorConnect, Waterford Upstart, Utah International Charter School, and Centro Hispano for being part of the day.

Our gratitude also goes out to the youth groups who joined us. Their energy and dedication helped keep the event running smoothly as they led children’s activities, served food, and lent a hand wherever it was needed.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Danette Holley, an ESLC volunteer and talented photographer. Danette first suggested offering free family photos at the picnic back in 2015, and it has since become a beloved tradition. Over the years, hundreds of families have been able to take home cherished memories captured at no cost to them. This year, as always, Danette’s generosity and skill made the experience extra special. We are delighted to share a gallery of this year’s family photos as a way to reflect on and celebrate the day together.

As we look back on this year’s Picnic in the Park, we are reminded of why this tradition matters so much. It’s more than just a fun evening with food. It’s a celebration of our shared mission and the relationships that make our work possible. Events like this showcase the strength of our community and the importance of creating spaces where everyone's voice is celebrated. We look forward to many more of these events to come!
