The ESLC is excited to spotlight an incredible student who exemplifies the ESLC mission. Yua Hwang, a participant in our Empowering Parents program at Granite Park Jr. High, is 78 years old and walks to class every day to learn English.

Yua Hwang and her certificate of completion for the 2024-2025 Empowering Parents school year.
As one of the few non-spanish speaking students in her classroom, she has built a strong sense of community within her classroom. She enjoys getting to know her fellow students and building connections with them.
Yua, starting classes earlier this school year in August has accumulated 137 hours of class time! She is a great example of the dedication and determination learners have across our various learning locations.
At the English Skills Learning Center, we believe that education has the power to uplift individuals and strengthen communities, and Yua’s journey is a beautiful reminder of that truth. Her story inspires us to continue creating spaces where all learners feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
We are grateful for students like Yua who remind us the "why" of our mission.
