On September 17, the Utah Cultural Celebration Center came alive with joy, anticipation, and celebration as it hosted a memorable citizenship and naturalization ceremony—the kickoff event for Welcoming Week 2024 in Salt Lake City. This powerful gathering was a heartwarming reminder of what makes our community truly beautiful: the diversity, strength, and resilience of its people.
The ceremony honored the journeys of dozens of soon-to-be U.S. citizens, including several ESLC Citizenship students were who were about to take the final step toward achieving their American dream. Among the featured speakers was our very own Executive Director, Katie Donoviel.
Katie's speech celebrated the incredible strength that newcomers bring to the community, highlighting their perseverance and determination. She also took a moment to honor the family members of the soon-to-be citizens—those who have supported and uplifted their loved ones through every challenge along the path to citizenship. These behind-the-scenes efforts, she noted, are undercelebrated forces that help New Americans succeed.
As she concluded her remarks, Katie delivered a message that brought smiles to many faces in the audience: “Welcome Home.” It was a simple yet profound reminder of what the ceremony—and Welcoming Week—are all about: creating a community where everyone is welcome, and where all voices are celebrated.
This event was not only a powerful start to Welcoming Week but also a meaningful celebration of what it means to be part of a community that embraces diversity and recognizes the unique contributions of its newest members. This event will remain a special reminder of the beauty of inclusion and the shared strength we build together. We look forward to many more ceremonies throughout the coming year!
Welcome home to all our new U.S. citizens—we're so proud to have you as part of our community! 🌟
